NEW & IMPROVED - Self washing hair

Washing my hair in the shower the other day I was reminded of a theory I heard in my school years...

I think it went something like 'if you leave your hair unwashed for 3 months it will start to wash itself'. The theory being that then you would never again have to wash your hair. So, in year 9 I decided that, instead of trying to attract members of the opposite sex, now would be the best possible time to make myself as scanky as possible in an effort to prove the theory wrong. So I didn't wash my hair for a month, and yeah, it got fairly rank. In fact, I don't think I ever did see it through. One thing's for sure...the girls ran a mile and I think that it dawned on me to start washing my hair again.

I dunno if I was hoping I would end up looking like someone out of The Levellers or some other dread-sporting, marley-esq dude? But I never had the guts to get to the end of the exercise. And so I ask by the medium of blog, has anyone ever done it? Is anyone still a proud host of unwashed hair (and all the other living benefits that have inhabited therein)? Is there any truth in the rumour? Or is it just a playground myth that the clever, suave boys tell the geeky little gimps to keep the competition sparse?

If you didn't wash your hair then I bet that bit that sticks out at the side by your right ear wouldn't stick out anymore as it would be greased down so that would be a bonus...on the other hand I wouldn't want to marry you...

This is not a myth it is true. A goth at school didn't wash her hair for a year and after a while it looked clean. Later in life when I started training to be a nurse we somehow got on to this topic and apparently hair, much the same as ears, after a while cleans itself. With ears if you never attacked them with the cotton buds the wax eventually builds up and washes out as you wash your hair - although I guess if you did bot the hair and the ear experiment together your ears would be very waxy.

Yeah I recall watching a programme when I was a kid, some sort of Gross Science thing, where they asked this girl to not wash her hair for weeks and at the great unvielling it looked really ok. However, I also recall that she reported all sorts of horrible stages that it went through before it finally sorted itself out though and that's really not for here - you might be eating something when you read this.

I've never tried the whole not washing hair thing...
I occasionally go a day without washing it - but other than that it gets some of the H&S treament!

I have been known to mistakenly rub showergel into my hair and shampoo on my body...
its annoying, i do it time and time again - i really should pay more attention in the shower!

An anonymous friend who some of you will know once used tea tree oil shampoo as shower gel. He was on the ground floor and I could hear his yelps from the 2nd floor... Not totally relevant, just quite funny

When i was young, I never washed my hair because i HATED the pooofyness it would do. years later i grew my hair really long and would wash it every day. the problem then was that it would tangle and when i brushed it it would pull out a strand at a time until i started noticably getting thinner. I resolved to never wash my hair again. you know what? I haven't washed my hair in a year and it's never looked healthier, and all those broken strands have grown back.

To be absolutely clear thou... i wash my hair all the time - with water, I just don't use any products in them. I find the beach is the GREATEST hair care product.

Also i tell a lie, in the last year i did wash my hair once with shampoo - as an experiment. made my hair silky smooth for a day, but then after that it went absolutely lifeless!!

never again!

I also don't use toothpast. I brush my teet with salt water. haven't had bad breath since!!

I haven't washed my hair for almost 2 months now and it is amazing. The curl is better and there is lots of body...all my friends are shocked and amazed. And it doesn't even smell at all. I wash it with water probably twice a week.

I haven't washed my hair for 2 weeks and 4 days now in an experiment to see if it will turn into the beautiful glossy hair I've always wanted but so far it is horribly dirty and smelly. I'm not sure how much longer I can keep this up.

I have not washed my hair for 19 months now, and it looks amazing, best it has EVER been, lovely and full and thick and glossy, and I have long hair too. NEver again will I return to the horrible shampoo, warm water rinsing is fine.

Prior to this 19 months, I had not washed my hair for 6 months and it was great too, but I tried an experiment and shampood and conditioned as a one off....OMG did I regret it, my hair went horrible and dry, flyaway, unmanageable and revolting. Needless to say I am NEVER washing it with chemicals again....
